Your Search Console Just Got the Most Important New Tab in Years
The tab you have been waiting for landed quietly. No fanfare. Just a new entry under Performance in Google Search Console labeled Generative AI. For the first time, you can see exactly which pages on your site are appearing inside AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Not a minor tweak. For content marketing teams publishing into an AI-first search landscape, this single data view changes how you measure whether your content program is working.
What Rolled Out and When
Google launched generative AI performance reports in June 2026, starting with a limited UK rollout under a Competition and Markets Authority mandate. By August 31, 2026, the reports went live globally for every verified Search Console property. A companion opt-out toggle followed, giving site owners the ability to exclude their content from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover's generative features without affecting standard search rankings.
September 15 and 16 coverage confirmed both features are now accessible to all site owners worldwide.
What the Report Actually Shows
Four dimensions. That is the entire dataset right now.
Impressions by page. Impressions by country. Impressions by device. Impressions by date. The report covers visibility inside AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search, plus generative AI features in Discover. There are no clicks. No queries. No average position column.
Google confirmed it is "continuing to work with website owners to understand what insights will be most helpful," which means click reporting is on the roadmap with no confirmed date. The UK's CMA is actively requiring click-through data as part of Google's compliance requirements, with a deadline of March 2027. For now, you have an impressions-only view.
That limitation is real. But impressions-only still gives you something you have never had before: a verified list of which pages Google's AI systems trust enough to surface inside a generated answer.
The Opt-Out: Who Should and Shouldn't Use It
The toggle lives at Settings > Search generative AI in Search Console. The default is Include. Switching to Exclude removes your property from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover's generative features while leaving standard organic rankings untouched. Google confirmed the opt-out carries no ranking signal penalty outside of AI features.
AI Overviews now reaches 2.5 billion monthly users. AI Mode passed one billion. The citation slot inside those answer blocks is the fastest-growing discovery surface in search right now. Pulling out before you have 30 days of impression data to study is guesswork dressed up as strategy.
The case for opting out is narrow. Subscription publishers, paywalled content operations, and brands with a documented revenue risk from AI summarization have a legitimate reason to consider it. B2B content teams, marketing operations, and business sites running industry news sections do not. For those teams, earning citation is the objective.
What Google Added Next to That Organic Citation Slot
On September 15, Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable documented that Google is actively testing text-based ad formats directly inside AI Mode responses. The format looks like standard AI Mode text links with anchor text, labeled "Sponsored" above the response block. No separate ad box. No bold label below. Inline, inside the AI answer.
This follows April's rollout of organic anchor-text links inside AI Mode responses. The sequence is telling. First organic links appear inside AI answers. Then paid links appear in the same format. The AI-generated answer block is becoming the primary real estate in search, and Google is building both organic and paid layers inside it simultaneously.
The organic citation slot does not disappear because sponsored links now sit nearby. The two coexist. But the signal to content teams is direct: the answer block is where competition for attention now lives.
What Actually Earns a Citation Slot
Google's guidance on this has been consistent throughout 2026. Pages need to be indexed, provide genuinely useful and accurate content, and carry clear entity and authority signals. No additional technical requirements exist for AI feature inclusion beyond standard indexing eligibility.
Citation patterns inside AI Overviews have stabilized compared to 2024 and early 2025. Sources with consistent topical authority, structured headings that let AI systems extract discrete claims, fresh publication dates, and credible external sourcing are appearing more reliably inside AI answers than during the volatile early rollout period.
This is where a disciplined content publishing cadence separates high-performing content programs from stalled ones.
A site running an industry news section on a predictable schedule, publishing factual and human-reviewed content tied to verified recent events, builds exactly the citation footprint that AI search rewards. Freshness, topical depth, source credibility, and human review on claims all register as positive signals. A site that publishes sporadically, or publishes undifferentiated AI-generated pages without human review, does not build that footprint.
AI-assisted content marketing is not the problem. Google's August 2026 spam update targeted programmatic, zero-value content. Not the category where AI drafts a structured first pass and a human expert reviews, adds context, verifies accuracy, and publishes on schedule. That human-in-the-loop layer is what separates content that earns citation from content that does not.
Reading Your New GSC Data
Open Search Console now. Check for the Generative AI tab under Performance. If your property has received enough impressions in AI features, the tab will be there. Pull the page view first. Sort by impressions descending.
The pages appearing most inside AI answers are your citation benchmarks. Study their heading structure, claim density, and how they reference external sources. Those structural patterns are what Google's AI systems are selecting for.
Pages with zero AI impressions despite strong organic rankings are a content structure question. Look at heading precision, whether key claims are stated directly within each section, and whether entity signals are consistent across the page.
Thirty days of impression data before you touch the opt-out toggle. For most marketing teams running content programs built around industry authority content, the generative AI report is not a reason to exit AI search. It is the first verifiable evidence about where your content is already earning authority in the most important new search surface of 2026.
