Google’s People Also Ask Box Is Now 97% AI

The Click You Used to Earn Is Being Absorbed at the Moment of Curiosity

Fourteen months ago, roughly 12% of Google's People Also Ask answers were generated by AI. In the first week of September 2026, that number reached 97%.

Two independent datasets confirm it. AlsoAsked analyzed 19.2 million English-language queries and found the month-over-month jump sharp: 86% in August, 97% by early September 2026. A second tool, Allintitle's Also Ask Miner, measured 100% from August onward. Mark Williams-Cook, founder of AlsoAsked, wrote on LinkedIn: "It seems highly likely we are on track for 100% shortly."

This is not a gradual shift. This is a format being replaced.

The PAA box used to extract a passage from a real page and link to it directly. Click the expanded answer and you landed on the site that wrote it. That click path is now largely absorbed inside Google. Your page can still appear as a citation underneath the AI-generated answer. But it has to earn that position from a machine doing the summarizing, not from a searcher choosing to click a link.

When the Click Disappears, the Visit Economics Change Completely

Publishers felt this in July 2026. The 100 largest media publishers spent an estimated $113 million on paid search that month. That is 41% more than the same period a year earlier and 274% more than three years ago. They were attempting to buy back visits they used to earn organically. The traffic those budgets produced was up 39% year over year. The spend grew faster than the traffic it purchased. That is what a crowded auction looks like when organic routes close.

Your content team is probably not in the news publishing business at that scale. That makes the question simpler: how do you stay in the citation stack when you cannot outspend your way back in?

Ranking and citation are different things now, measured differently. An AI Overview inside a PAA box is generated from content that Google's systems judge to be trustworthy, structured, and answerable in plain language. Your page can rank fourth organically and still be the cited source. Your page can rank first and get summarized out of existence if the AI generates a better answer from someone else's content.

SEO data from August 2026 found that 73-74% of sites cited inside AI Overviews ranked in the organic top 10. That leaves meaningful room for pages outside the top three, if they answer a narrow sub-question with more clarity than the ranking pages above them.

The question is no longer "how do I rank?" It is "how do I become the source Google quotes?"

What Google's August Spam Update Told Us About the Wrong Answer

The wrong answer is: publish more AI content at scale and force your way into citations.

Google's August 2026 spam update ran August 18-21 and produced an 82% increase in top-10 URLs dropping entirely out of the top 100 compared to the baseline period. SE Ranking's analysis of 100,000 keywords across 20 industries found that 16.71% of URLs that had ranked in Google's top 10 fell beyond position 100 during the update. A top-10 URL was 1.8 times more likely to disappear from the top 100 during the spam update than during a comparable quiet window.

Case studies from the update show a recurring pattern: programmatic or AI-generated pages built at scale, with no meaningful human review, in YMYL niches. One site lost rankings for over 200,000 queries. Not declined. Lost entirely. And this matters for AI visibility too, not just blue-link rankings. Google's spam policies were rewritten in May 2026 to explicitly cover AI Overviews and AI Mode. Attempting to manipulate AI citations through mass content production now falls under the same enforcement as traditional link spam.

Content created to game citations is not the same as content created to earn them. Google's systems are separating those two populations aggressively.

The Citation Model That Actually Scales

What the data points toward is content that does three things well.

It answers a narrow, specific question with a structured, direct response. One clear question answered in one clear passage is more citable than five hundred words of contextual preamble. Definitions, step-by-step breakdowns, comparison answers, and direct procedural guidance are the query types where AI Overviews absorb the most clicks and where being the cited source matters most.

It carries original evidence. Proprietary data, first-hand analysis, expert commentary that a language model cannot reconstruct from other sources. When a content team publishes a piece referencing a primary source and adds a layer of genuine interpretation, that article becomes a citation candidate because it says something that only that team could say.

It goes through real human review. Not a quick final check. An actual editorial layer that catches errors, adds judgment, and ensures the content reflects real subject-matter understanding. The Orbit Media 2026 blogging survey found that formal human editing produces nearly 2x the performance benchmark for content. Adoption of that practice is declining while its performance lift holds steady.

This is the model that is hardest to replicate with pure AI generation. It is also the model that consistently ends up cited inside AI answers.

Why a Scheduled News Section Has a Structural Advantage

There is a content type that fits this citation model naturally: timely industry news with editorial analysis.

When a content team publishes an article that references a primary source, frames it with expert context, and structures the key insight as a direct and citable passage, that article does several things simultaneously. It builds topical authority on the subject. It signals freshness to crawlers that are constantly pulling from recent and authoritative sources. It creates a citation candidate for AI systems operating exactly the kind of synthesis that now powers 97% of PAA answers.

Teams running a consistent publishing schedule, with human oversight on every piece, and original angles tied to verifiable primary sources will find the citation layer becoming a net positive for brand visibility. They appear as the source inside AI answers even without earning a direct click. Teams publishing volume without editorial investment will find the August spam update pattern repeating, update after update.

The PAA box did not kill content strategy. It redistributed the reward to the teams willing to do the harder version of it.

FAQ

Should content teams stop creating FAQ and question-based content now that PAA is nearly 100% AI-generated?

No. Question-based content still gets surfaced inside AI Overviews, it just gets read inside Google rather than clicked through directly. The value of question content shifts from click acquisition to citation acquisition. Pages that answer narrow questions with structured, evidence-backed responses have a stronger chance of becoming the source an AI Overview pulls from. The writing and structure have to be built for extraction, not just for ranking.

What content characteristics most increase the chance of being cited in an AI-generated PAA answer?

Direct answer placement near the top of the relevant section. Schema markup that signals the content type. Clear entity structure so the AI can identify what the answer is about. Original evidence or data that distinguishes the page from competitors covering the same topic. And crawlability, because content that AI systems cannot access cannot be cited regardless of quality.

Does using AI to write content put a site at risk of the August spam update type penalties?

Using AI as part of the writing process is not a Google policy violation. What triggered the August 2026 spam update was scaled content abuse: large volumes of pages built primarily to rank or get cited, with no meaningful human review, no original insight, and no genuine value for a reader. Google's May 2026 spam policy revision made clear that this applies to AI citation manipulation as well as traditional ranking manipulation. Human review, original angles, and editorial quality are what separate content that earns citations from content that gets filtered.
